John H. Carpenter served in Companies L. & K. in the 9th Illinois Cavalry in the Civil War.

He enlisted on Sep 17, 1861 ate the age of 22 and was mustered into Co. L., 9th IL. Cavalry for 3 years service on Oct 26, 1861. He was described as 22 years old 5' 7-3/4" tall with brown hair, gray eyes, fair complexion, a clerk by occupation born in New York. On Oct 25, 1862 he was appointed Sergeant Major, then Lt. and Adjutant of the Regiment and was mustered out on Oct 31, 1865 at Selma, AL.,as Captain.

In the 1850 census of Chicago John is listed as 10 years old, born in NY. residing with his parents William and Ann Carpenter. His father was a grouchier with property valued at $1200.00, and both parents were natives of Ireland.

On May 17, 1880 he received an Army Invalid Pension for his service in the war, and following his death, his wife Ada L. Carpenter received an Army Widows Pension beginning Aug 26, 1902.

In 1894 John married Ada L. Finch, he was 56, she was 31, they had at least one child Lester Finch Carpenter born July 10, 1895.

In the 1900 census of Chicago, John is listed as a 60 year old lawyer born in Jan 1840 in NY, both parents born in Ireland, residing with his wife Ada 35 born Aug 1864 married 6 years she had 1 child none living. Also residing with them was her sister Elizabeth Finch 48 and two nieces Gertrude and Marietta Finch.

As a proud Union Army Veteran John was a member of George H. Thomas Post #5 Grand Army of the Republic in Chicago, IL.

When John died on July 23, 1902 his death certificate stated he was a married lawyer 60 years old born in 1840 in Buffalo, NY, buried at Rose Hill Cemetery on July 25, 1902.
