Vernon L. Dumke, 78, of Peshtigo, passed away Thursday morning, March 16 at Bay Area Medical Center, Marinette, WI. He was born Jan. 13, 1928 in Marinette to the late Mr. and Mrs. Herman (Honora Chaikowski) Dumke, he resided in the area most of his life.

He was a 1945 graduate of Marinette High School, entering military service after graduation. He served postwar in the United States Army as an x-ray technician, working at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C.
He later attended the then University of Wisconsin Extension in Marinette and Lawrence University in Appleton. Although recognized at an early age for his talent as a vocalist, he pursued a career in the forest products industry, having worked in logging with his father as a teenager. Known as the “Singing Logger” he established his own saw mill business in August of 1969. Working in all facets of his business, Dumke Forest Products, Inc., he served as company president for many years while pursuing his own interests as a land developer.

His love of singing led him to vocal study at the Chicago Conservatory of Music and participation in Metropolitan Opera Regional Auditions. He sang with the American Opera Company of Chicago over the course of many years.
Locally, he appeared in numerous performance venues, including Theatre on the Bay and was known in Door County as well. For many years he sang as soloist at the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Marinette and frequently sang at St. James Lutheran Church.
With his wife, the former Gail Thompson Johnson of Peshtigo, he traveled extensively, visiting many parts of the world and attended many performance seasons of the Lyric Opera in Chicago. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Riverside Country Club and the Marinette Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife Gail;
seven children: Sandra Juster of Las Vegas, Nevada; Susan Dumke of Milwaukee, WI; Kitty Whitaker of Los Angeles, California; Glenn (Christine) Dumke of Marinette, WI; Wade Johnson and Neil (Cathy) Johnson, both of Peshtigo, WI and Blaine (Kristen) Dumke of Minneapolis, Minn.;
12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren;
a brother, Darrell (Barbara) Dumke of Marinette and a sister, Dorothy Hassemer of Peshtigo.

Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon, March 18 at 1 p.m. at Hansen-Onion-Martell Funeral Home, Marinette. Darrel Diers officiated and burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Peshtigo.
