"In April [1900], Frank MacGowan, son of Col. J. E. MacGowan, and one of the firm of MacGowan & Cooke, died, after a comparatively brief illness. He was born in Iowa, went to school in Ohio and came to Chattanooga at eight years of age, and spent the rest of his life in our city or on Missionary Ridge, except two years in St. Louis, where he went to perfect himself in printing. He was postal clerk from 1877 to 1880, in 1881 engaged in job printing, before becoming a member of the printing firm of MacGowan & Cooke. He was president at the time of his death of the MacGowan & Cooke Company. He never married, but was a good son and brother, thoroughly master of his business and remarkably kind and thoughtful to those in his employ."
