Margery Luxem Nevers, of Tiburon, the widow of Hall of Fame football star and professional baseball player Ernie Nevers, died October 31, 2009, of natural causes following a short illness. She was in her 90s.

A service will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, December 4, at St. Hilary Church on Rock Hill Drive.

Mrs. Nevers was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Chicago. After their marriage, she and her husband came west in 1959 and settled in Tiburon.

Mrs. Nevers became a real estate agent and worked for the Tiburon office of Frank Howard Allen for many years.
A resident of Lyford Cove, she took an interest in neighborhood and civic matters and wrote many letters to the editor. Most recently, she had come out against the proposed expansion of The Caprice restaurant.

“She was feisty right up until her last days,” said her daughter.

Ernie Nevers had been a Hall of Fame fullback for the Chicago Cardinals and a baseball pitcher for the St. Louis Browns. A 37-cent postage stamp with his likeness on it was released in 2003.

Mrs. Nevers’ husband died in 1976. She is survived by her daughter, Tina Nevers, of Tiburon; a granddaughter, Tara Gallison, of Greenville, California; and three great-grandchildren.
