The First Bishop of the Diocese of Paterson, Monsignor Thomas Henry McLaughlin was born in New York City and was was ordained priest by Bishop Balthasar Kaltner on July 26, 1904. Earning a doctorate in sacred theology from Innsbruck in 1908, upon his return to the United States, he became professor at Seton Hall College of South Orange, serving as dean from 1914 until 1922, when he was elected president of Seton Hall and rector of Immaculate Conception Seminary.

Named Domestic Prelate of His Holiness in 1923 and vicar general of the Diocese of Newark in 1933, at fifty three years of age he was appointed Auxiliary for the Diocese of Newark, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Nisa in Lycia on July 25, 1935 from Archbishop Thomas J. Walsh, assisted by Bishops John A. Duffy and Joseph H. Schlarman.

Appointed the First Bishop of the newly erected See of Paterson on December 16, 1937, he designated St. John the Baptist church as the diocese's cathedral. McLaughlin passed away in office in 1947.
