Governor of Montana. A member of the Republican Party, he served as the 16th Governor of the State of Montana from 1962 until 1969. He served as an infantry man in the European Theater with the United States Army during World War II and following his return home, he began his career in the political arena, when he was elected to the Montana House of Representatives. He was elected Lieutenant Governor of Montana in 1960 and became Governor following the death of Donald G. Nutter in a plane crash in 1962. During his governorship, he adjusted a sales tax which was implemented by his predecessor. After leaving office he was appointed by President Nixon to serve on the National Advisory Committee on Oceans and Atmosphere. He went on to a position as an executive for businessman Armand Hammer.
