He had served 2 years as a coast guard. He was one of 3 brothers in a large extended family and his parents had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He was predeceased by his first wife and divorced from his second wife. He was the father of 4 children, with an outstanding Family Court arrest warrant for failing to pay child support. About 9:30am on a Saturday, he was driving a Mercedes-Benz that had a broken tail light, when he was pulled over in a routine traffic stop. When he was tasered, he ran away from the police officer who then fatally shot 8 times at the unarmed black man's back. A witness caught the end of the incident on video and 3 days later, the white policeman was charged with murder. A 2 hour funeral service was held on Saturday, 11 April 2015 at W.O.R.D. Ministries with the Rev. George Hamilton officiating, followed by a private burial.
