Evanston Review (IL) - Thursday, January 7, 1999

Enos C. Perry, 90, of Evanston died Jan. 1 in the inpatient unit of the Hospice of the North Shore at Evanston Hospital.

Born in Goreville, Ill., in 1908, he moved to Chicago at age 17 and earned a bachelor's degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology, a master's degree from Northwestern University and a law degree from DePaul University, graduating cum laude.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946, where he rose to the rank of commander and received a citation from the Secretary of the Navy for outstanding performance of duty.

Mr. Perry began a 44-year career with the Chicago public schools in 1929, teaching business and social science at high school levels. In 1948, he was promoted to principal. Three years later, he became the director of business education at the Chicago Board of Education, where he worked until he retired in 1973.

Mr. Perry was an advocate of educational programs that encouraged students to develop marketable skills. As director, he gained national recognition for developing programs in distributive education and office occupations, and often served as a consultant to other large metropolitan school systems as they formulated similar programs.

He developed and promoted a course for economic competence for teachers in Chicago, which more than 6,000 teachers attended over the years.

Mr. Perry founded both the Chicago Business Teachers Association and the National Association for Vocational Business Education and served as president of the National Business Teachers Association. He also was a director of the National Schools Committee for Economic Education.

He authored several textbooks and many articles in professional journals. "Sales Horizons," a high school textbook on marketing and selling, was used by many school systems throughout the country for over a decade after its publication in 1958.

Mr. Perry also taught summer school courses in the School of Education at Northwestern University and continued to teach at the university for three years following his retirement from the Chicago public schools.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen B.; a son, Peter L.; a daughter, Susan L.; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services and interment were private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the inpatient unit of the Hospice of the North Shore, 2821 Central St., Evanston, IL 60201 or to the Retired Teachers Association of Chicago, 220 S. State St., Room 2100, Chicago, IL 60604.
