Jack Dobbs McSpadden, age 87, of Birmingham, died Sunday, September 3, 1995.

At age 18, he was one of the youngest graduates of the University of Alabama where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He retired 22 years ago as Executive Vice President of Liberty National Life Insurance Company following 43 years of service but remained active as a Director Emeritus. Long active at Independent Presbyterian Church, he also served as a Trustee of Maryville College in Tennessee. He was a past President of the Country Club of Birmingham and a member of Mountain Brook Club and Rotary. Thirty-two years ago, he was one of three original founders of the Birmingham Botanical Society.

He shared the vision for the potential of UAB and 33 years ago served as Chairman of the Mayor's Council for the Medical Center. This led to legislation which eventually enabled UAB to acquire the 60 square blocks of land that forms its campus. He served on the UAB President's Council. He founded and funded the UAB HOPE Scholarship Program (Helping Other People Excel). In 1986, UAB awarded him an honorary Doctor of Law Degree.

He was a major supporter of United Way of Central Alabama serving among other positions as Campaign Chairman, President and Trustee. He instilled his sense of community service in his family resulting in the first and only father-daughter to hold the top volunteer position at United Way.

Survivors: wife, two daughters, son and seven grandchildren.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, September 6, 1995, 11:00 a.m. at Independent Presbyterian Church on Highland Ave. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:00 p.m. at the church prior to the funeral. A private graveside ceremony will be held at Elmwood Cemetery after the funeral service. Ridout's Valley Chapel directing.
