James George Healy, 95, died peacefully with Irish music and his loving granddaughter, Kelly and her mother, Karen, at his side on Thursday, March 20, 2014. Jim was a resident of the Nottingham in Jamesville, NY.
Jim, the youngest of six children, was born in Buffalo, NY on June 30, 1918. He graduated from Canisius College in 1940 where he was recognized as a member of the DiGamma Honor Society. A WWII veteran, he served honorably with the US Army 102 AAA, AW BN, from January 1941 until June 1945. His unit was among the first U.S. combat soldiers deployed to the Pacific in early February 1942. Jim considered himself fortunate to participate 70 years later in an "Honor Flight" to the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C.
While serving at Camp Edwards in Cape Cod in the spring of 1941, Jim met his future wife, Catherine (Kay) Fairclough. After being honorably discharged in the summer of 1945, Jim graduated from Cornell University School of Hotel Administration and then married Catherine in 1947. Jim spent most of his career in the hotel industry, starting at the Hotel Syracuse in 1947, opening the Treadway Inn in Niagara Falls in 1957 and retiring from the Syracuse Airport Inn in 1997. He and Kay were married for 64 years before Kay died in 2012.
Jim was active in the Syracuse Junior Chamber of Commerce, IFSEA (International Food Service Executives Association), a board member of the Syracuse Sports Commission and a lifelong Rotarian. He attended his last Rotary meeting on St. Patrick's Day, two days before he passed away. A man of high integrity who had a gracious and kind outlook on life, he rarely complained about anything other than a bad golf shot.
He is survived by his son, Jim; daughter, Mary; sister-in-law, Jean Kaczenski; grandchildren, Christine, James, Kelly and Jamie; great-grandchildren, Alex, Erik and Isabelle; and many nieces and nephews. His wife, Kay; his son, Paul; his brother, Joe and sisters, Marie, Dorothy, Ruth and Virginia predeceased him.
The family will welcome friends to the Burns-Garfield Funeral Home, 3175 Genesee Street, Syracuse on Thursday, March 27, from 4 to 6 p.m. Services will be at Holy Cross Church, DeWitt on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Rotary Club of DeWitt, NY (www.dewittrotary.org) or to the Honor Flight Network, (www.honorflight.org)
