Henry Balla was the ninth born child of Hungarian émigrés, Alexander Balla (1886-1950) and Julia Molnar (1885-1962); and he was the third of their children to have been born in Texas, where they moved after leaving New York. He was the beloved brother of Alex Balla Jr., Ima (Balla) Creech, Frank Balla, John Balla, Irene (Balla) Sebok, Esther (Balla) Sacchelli, Arpod Balla, Aline (Balla) Goetz, and Ethel Jewel (Balla) Elmer.

Much of his early life was spent in Sabine and Jasper counties of Texas. On the 11 July 1941, Henry married Evelyn Feris Hooks (1921-1991), the daughter of William Thomas Hooks (1891-1975) and Maggie Gore (1902-1944), in Hardin Co., Texas. Henry and Evelyn had eight children: Billy, Henrietta, Barbara, Glenn, Linda, Michael, Jimmy, and James. Henry worked and retired from Southern Pacific Railroad.

On the 27 August 1975, Henry passed away. His funeral was held on the 29 August 1975 at Farmer Funeral Chapel in Silsbee. Henry was buried in Gore Cemetery. His wife, Evelyn, followed him in death sixteen years later. She was buried next to Henry, and their son Glenn.
