Ira served as Pvt. Sgt. and 1st Lt. in Company H. 20th Illinois Infantry in the Civil War.

Ira enlisted on June 13, 1861, at Joliet, IL. for 3 years service in Co. H. 20th IL Infantry. He was described as a 26 year old teacher, born in Centerville, NY. He was 5' 7-1/2" tall with black hair, hazel eyes, and dark complexion. On Jan 5, 1864 he reenlisted in the rank of Sergeant as a "Veteran Volunteer" for an additional 3 years service at Black River, MS. He was commissioned 1st Lt. of Company H. on June 29, 1865, and was mustered out on July 16, 1865.

On Sep 29, 1865 Ira received an Amy Invalid Pension for injuries incurred during the civil war. When he died, his wife Annie E. Blanchard received an Army Widows Pension beginning on April 21, 1898.

In the 1880 census of Chicago, Ira is listed as a 48 year old bookkeeper born in New York in 1832, residing with his wife Annie 38 born NY, and their children Emma 10 and Ira E. 6, both born in IL., and step-son Albert T. Blanchard 17, born in NY.

When Ira died on April 13, 1898 in Chicago, his death certificate stated he was 62 years old, born in 1836 in NY, and a gateman for the Northwestern Rail Road. He was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery on April 14, 1898.
