Duane Clair Stevenson, 93, of Lamoni, Iowa passes away from this life on January 16, 2007 at the Mercy Hospice Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Duane was born November 16, 1913 at Burnside, Illinois. His parents were Charlie and Tot [Lambert] Stevenson. Duane lived in, and around Nauvoo, Illinois until 1951. In that year he moved the family to a Missouri farm, in the Evergreen neighborhood, just a few miles southwest of Lamoni.

At the age of 8, Duane was baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS), now known as Community of Christ. He was a faithful and devoted member all the days of his life. He was ordained to the office of priest in 1977 and to the office of elder in 1988.

After moving to the Lamoni area, Duane and his family attended the Evergreen RLDS Congregation until the church building burned on December 29, 1986. for the next several years, he was a member and minister in the Bethany, Missouri Congregation. Duane most recently was a member of the Andover, Missouri Congregation.

Duane worked in farming most of his life. In Nauvoo, he also hauled milk for the local cheese factory. In Lamoni, Duane worked during the winter months for Bert Brooks in the bakery and for Fred Cool in his organ business. Duane was a hard worker. His work ethic has been an inspiration to his family and acquaintances.

Duane was blessed with a large family and his devotion to it was unceasing. He loved spending time with members of his family and took much satisfaction in the accomplishments of each one. Duane married Jessie Sherman on May 24, 1935. She passed away after an automobile accident in 1936, leaving an infant son, Charles Robert. Duane married Eudora Garrett on January 6, 1938. To this union there were born 14 children. Eudora passed away in 1954. Duane married Arthea [Cole] Ballantyne on October 4, 1959. One son, Vernon Vey, was born to Arthea and Duane. Arthea passed away in 2002 following a long illness. Duane married Ann Cain on August 7, 2005. Ann has been a faithful companion, caring for his needs, over the past year and a half.

In addition to the mothers of his children, Duane was preceded in Death by his parents; his brother, Gomer Leon; infant daughter, Sandra Ellen; son, Donnie Lee; infant baby daughter; and grandsons, Jimmy Stevenson and Tim Stevenson.

Survivors include his wife, Ann; his children (and spouses), Charles Robert (Joyce), Lester (Joyce), Carl (Janet), Arlo (Julie), Linda (Richard) Sams, Elmer (Diana), Janet (Larry) Pratt, Ellen (Roy) Shields, Leo (Kathie), Bonnie (Dennis) Clubb, Cecil (Nancy), Joseph, and Vernon (Monica); stepchildren (and spouses), Danny Ballantyne, Crystal (Alvin) Coop, Morris Ballantyne, Harold Ballantyne, Wayne (Carolyn) Marshall, Tamara Stevenson, and Wesley (Toni) Cain; brother, Leo (Lois); 38 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many other relatives, friends, and neighbors.

Funeral services were held January 22 at Lamoni Community of Christ with Elder Roy Shields and Evangelist Lester Stevenson officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni.

Memorials may be given to the Graceland University Alumni Scholarship Fund, Lamoni, or Mercy Hospice Center of Johnston, Iowa.
