5P 3/C Robert was killed, along with twenty-two others, when a Braniff International Airways twin-engine Convair airliner crashed at Midway Airport in Chicago. For five seasons, he pitched for the Rockford Blue Star Potato Chips, a Jaycee league. He was coming home on furlough from Ft. Hood, Texas, where he served with the 1st Armored Division. His parents were at the airport to meet his plane

He was the husband of the former Shirley Ann Parker. The couple had two sons: Roger, age three, and Gregg, age two. His siblings: Don, Dorothy Hamer, Viola Sutherland, and Marion Peck survived him, too.
