American Actress and Entertainer. She will best be remembered for her role as Janice Rand, the personal assistant who served alongside William Shatner's Captain James T. Kirk aboard the USS Enterprise during the first season of 'Star Trek' and in subsequent film versions. Born Mary Ann Chase, she landed a job as a teenage singer on a radio station in Detroit and later played Chicago nightclubs. In 1951, she appeared on Broadway in the musical comedy 'Top Banana', starring Phil Silvers, and appeared in the 1954 movie version as well. Other films she appeared in were 'House of Wax' (1953), 'The Naked and the Dead (1958), 'Pocketful of Miracles' (1961), 'A Public Affair' (1962), 'The Man from Galveston' (1963). She also had roles in two Billy Wilder films that starred Jack Lemmon: 'Some Like It Hot' (1959) and 'Irma la Douce' (1963). In 1966, 'Star Trek' creator Gene Roddenberry cast her in the role of Janice Rand, appearing in eight of the first thirteen episodes, after which she was released from contract. Among other television shows she appeared in were 'The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp', 'Bat Masterson', 'The Real McCoys', 'The Outer Limits', 'The Rifleman', 'Batman' and 'Bewitched'. She reprised her role as Rand in 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' (1979), 'Star Trek III: The Search for Spock' (1984), 'Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home' (1986) and 'Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country' (1991), and in 2007 she filmed roles in two internet Star Trek episodes: 'Star Trek: New Voyages' and 'Star Trek: Of Gods and Men'. She was also a regular at 'Star Trek' conventions around the world and titled her autobiography "The Longest Trek". Whitney, who was a recovering alcoholic and spent the last 35 years of her life helping others with addiction problems, died of undisclosed causes.
