David Mdivani worked for a radio repair shop in New York City and also tried his hand at acting. He and his brother Serge, moved to Oklahoma and worked for oil magnate Edward L. Doheny until David moved to Hollywood in 1926 and married actress Mae Murray. After bankrupting Murray, they divorced and he went on to marry Virginia Sinclair, heiress to Sinclair Oil.
