Statesman. A hardline Communist, he served as Prime Minister of Hungary from 1955 to 1956. In 1955, he signed the treaty which established the Warsaw Pact. During the 1956 Hungarian Uprising against the Soviet Union, Hegedus was demoted to Deputy Prime Minister. In this capacity he called in Soviet troops to crush the revolt, an action that resulted in thousands of deaths and many fleeing the country. He later worked as a teacher and economic adviser, and was expelled from the Communist Party for expressing dissent against the Soviet regime he had once served.
