Emmett Taylor Boyd, 91, of Woodbine passed away Monday, May 4, 2015, at Capital Regional Medical Center in Tallahassee, Fla.

Mr. Boyd was born in the Rome community at Athens, Texas, on May 22, 1923, to the late Charles R. And Carrie Pearl Stone Boyd.

He was preceded in death by his four brothers, Dewey, Hubert, Grover and J.P., and three sisters, Thelma, Lucille and Dora, and his first wife, Marjorie Higgins Boyd. He was the last survivor of his family.

At age 16, after graduation from high school, he entered the United States Army. After retirement from the Army he settled in Glynn and Camden County, where he chose a career in banking. During World War II, he made the Normandy invasion at Utah Beach as an infantry platoon sergeant.

He was a member of the Company “K” 358th Infantry Division. In July 1944 his division re-assigned from the First Army to Patton’s Third Army. He fought through France, into Germany, then Luxembourg, Belgium, and back into Germany again.

Mr. Boyd was seriously wounded during the Battle of the Bulge on Jan. 31, 1945. He received a battlefield commission after being wounded and was unable to serve as an infantry officer. His commission was transferred to the finance corps. He also later served a tour in South Korea as a finance officer. He retired as a captain in the finance corps in October 1959.

Mr. Boyd is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Boyd; son and daughter-in-law, Charles E. and Lisa Boyd; and very special granddaughter, Mary Margaret (Maggie) Boyd; two stepsons, Jimmy (Christie) Foddrell and Kevin Foddrell; stepdaughter, Betty Ruth, and her husband, Robert Williams; four grandchildren, Jamie and Jordan Foddrell and Kristin and Alex Williams; two great-granddaughters, Gemma and Stella Tanner; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 7, 2015, at Allison Memorial Chapel in St. Marys.

A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2015, at St. Francis Assisi Catholic Church in Folkston with Fr. Mariusz Fuks officiating. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date.
