George (Shorty) Minuard Hanover, Sr was born in Stoddard County, MO to David and Ida (McKinney) Hanold. It is unknown why the surname was changed from Hanold to Hanover. Shorty's parents grave stone reads "Hanold".

Grandpa worked in the coal mines for many years. He died on Feb. 16th, 1980.

I am still trying to find the Missouri birth connection. His birth certificate states he was born in Stoddard County, Missouri. The only Missouri connection I could find was that his mother lived in Cedar County, Missouri in 1870. The family were found in Warrick County, Indiana and White County, Illinois on census records. His birth certificate states his name as Hanover. However, he is listed on his mother's funeral card as Hanold. His parent's surname on their gravestone is Hanold. I have found this family under both names. On his half-sister's, Elizabeth Wells, death notice (Browning Genealogy: Evansville Indiana Area Obituary Search) his brother, David Arva Hanold, is listed as Harvey (should be Arvy) Hanover.

Grandpa's early years were spent in Warrick County, Indiana and White County, Illinois. His first marriage to Reva Morgan ended in divorce and left him with three children to raise. My grandmother, Lucille, was hired to take care of the children while grandpa worked in the coal mines. They married in 1926 and had one child.

Grandpa was a very stern and religious man. As a child, he frightened me with his sermons. No television watching was allowed at his house unless it was the news or a religious program. He seldom drove. If they went anywhere, my grandmother drove. They lived back a long lane on Coake Ave in Danville. He kept the lawn and gardens meticulous.
