Prince Christian was the second eldest son of Ernest Augustus, Crown Prince of Hanover and Princess Thyra of Denmark, the youngest daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark and Princess Louise of Hesse-Kassel (or Hesse-Cassel). Christian was a great-great-grandson of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland, King of Hanover and of his wife, Duchess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The prince died from peritonitis at the age of 16 at the Hannover family's residence in Gmunden.
