Mary Leigh was born in 1750 at "Manchester", Chesterfield County, Virginia, the daughter of Ferdinand Leigh and Mary Cole. She married William Claiborne of "Sweet Hall", King William County, Virginia in 1770. They had five children, four sons and one daughter. Their distinguished sons were: General Ferdinand Leigh Claiborne, William Charles Cole Claiborne, Governor of Mississippi and Louisiana, Dr. Thomas Augustine Claiborne of New Orleans, Louisiana, Virginia State Senator and US Congressman Nathaniel Herbert Claiborne, of "Claybrook," Franklin County, Virginia Their daughter, Mary Leigh Claiborne married her cousin Bathurst Claiborne, son of Augustine Claiborne and Mary Herbert Claiborne.
Mary Leigh Claiborne died at the age of 32 "much regretted" as inscribed in the family Bible, i n handwriting that appears to be that of Elizabeth Archer Binford Claiborne. Elizabeth was her daughter-in-law, who married Mary's son, Nathaniel. Her children were 10, 7, 5, 3, and 27 months at her death. Her brother was the Rev. William Leigh who was father to Benjamin Watkins Leigh and Judge William Leigh.
