Found Dead in Jail Cell

John Craney Discovered Cold in Death By Sheriff Sweeney This Morning

John Craney was found dead this (Friday) morning in a jail cell he had occupied since Wednesday evening. The deceased had been drinking heavily for sometime past, returning to Sonora from Tuolumne on the evening he was incarcerated by his brother-in-law, night officer Thomas Costa.

The man was a wreck from the over-indulgence in liquor, and by his own efforts seemed powerless to resist the temptation to keep constantly inebriated. Through his love for drink, he lost interest in and neglected his two children, who have been cared for by their grand-parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Costa, practically since they were babes. Craney's wife died May 11, 1908, in Shasta County, the couple having been separated several years before.

Coroner Burden was immediately notified by the Sheriff of the death and he went to the jail and made a personal investigation. Death was unmistakably due to alcoholism.

The deceased was a native of Ireland and 38 years old. The funeral will occur on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, and the ceremonies will be conducted by the Eagles.

In 1900, the children were in the care of their grandparents, Peter and Adelaide Costa. The children's names were Edward and Celia Craney. Their mother was still alive, but she was not living in the same house. Edward passed away in Tuolumne County August 31, 1912, at age 18. Cecelia Adelaide Craney, their daughter, married
William Herbert Wax and had two children, Irene and Dorothy. She passed away in Eureka, California on March 7, 1975.
