Major League Baseball Player. The left-handed pitcher is best remembered for going 8-4 with a 3.14 earned run average in 52 games with 18 saves for the 1962 World Series champion New York Yankees. The 6-foot-1, 165-pound southpaw made his big-league debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1959 and went 6-3 with a 4.26 ERA. He split time with the Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds the following year, going 6-2 with a 2.38 ERA. Injuries limited him during the Reds' 1961 National League pennant season and he spent most of the season in the minor leagues. The Reds traded him to the Yankees on December 14, 1961 for catcher Jesse Gonder. He made two appearances in the World Series against the San Francisco Giants with no decisions. After his splendid 1962 season, he was shot during a bar-room incident that winter. He was 2-0 with a 3.82 ERA for the Yankees in 1963, but he was sold to Washington on November 27. He was 0-3 with a 5.70 ERA for the Senators in 1964 and 1-2 with a 2.67 ERA in 40 games in 1965. His career log was 23-15 with a 3.75 ERA and 25 saves.
