James Brown Winston was born to Mary Howson Wallace and William Alexander Winston. He received his Medical Degree at the University Virginia in 1839. In 1849 he moved to Los Angeles and made a career change to the hotel business. He partnered with Alpheus P. Hodges and together they took over and managed the old, historic Bella Union Hotel under the name of Winston and Hodges. He married Marguerite Josefa Maria Luisa Bandini on December 4, 1860, and together they had at least six children. He died at the age of 64. (Bio by: Jay Lance)
