Author, Motion Picture Screenwriter. Highly-underrated in-spite of being widely regarded as a brilliant writer, he will be best remembered for his penning of the novel "The Hunters" (1956), which was made into a 1958 motion picture adaptation which starred Robert Mitchum. Additionally, he wrote the screenplay for the film "Downhill Racer" (1969), which starred Robert Redford. Born James Horowitz to Jewish parents, his father was a real estate broker, he was raised in New York City. He attended West Point and later enlisted with the United States Army Air Corps. During the Korean War, he flew roughly one-hundred combat missions which became the basis for his novel "The Hunters." Salter left the military in 1957, in order to devote his time to writing. He wrote the screenplay for the film "The Appointment" (1969) and directed and wrote the story for the picture "Three" (1969). His memoir "Burning the Days" was published in 1997. Among his other novels include "Light Years" (1975), "Solo Faces" (1979) and "All That Is" (2013).
