Actor, Singer. Born Edwin Alonzo Bartlett, he graduated from Princeton University in 1924, where he starred in Triangle Club musicals. He traveled to Italy to study opera and made his professional debut under the name Edoardo Bartelli. He returned to the United States and made his American debut singing the leading role in “Faust” in Reading, Pennsylvania and later performed in many of the major opera houses in the United States. In the New York City, New York theater he appeared in numerous operettas and musical comedies including “Smiling Through”, “The Fiddle”, Moliere's “School for Husbands” and “Three Waltzes” with Kitty Carlisle. He signed a Hollywood contract with Twentieth Century Fox studios in 1929 to perform opposite Janet Gaynor in a musical but the film was never made. His break in Hollywood came in 1935 with the films “Love Me Forever” with Grace Moore and Leo Carillo and “She Married Her Boss” with Claudette Colbert and Melvyn Douglas. He later had starring roles in “Follow Your Heart” with Marion Talley and Nigel Bruce and an English musical, “The Lilac Domino”. In “The Music Goes 'Round” he was an uncredited guest singer. At the beginning of World War II he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as a Private. He would come out at the end of the war as a Captain. He returned home to North Oxford,Massachusetts after the war and continued performing until about 1962.
