Mr. William Foster "Bill" Booker, 85, of Mount Airy, husband of Ima Lee Martin Booker, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Booker was born April 1, 1930, in Surry County, the son of the late Edward and Arbell Jackson Booker. He was a well-respected local fixture in the window of the Bannertown Barber Shop, where he served his community and retired after 56 years. Mr. Booker was a longtime member of the Bannertown Fire Department, where he served as a dispatcher. He was a loyal and active member of Bannertown Ruritan Club and Bannertown Baptist Church. Mr. Booker was affectionately known as Poppy to his family and was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His family was the center point of his life and he cherished a special relationship with each one. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Ima Lee Martin Booker of the home; two daughters, Susan Booker Carter of Wilson and Michelle Booker Brown of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Lynn Booker of Walnut Cove; grandchildren, Heather Brooks, Jessica Booker, William Booker, Jr., Sydney Carter, Anna Brown, and Martin Brown; four great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Glenda Wagoner of Clemmons. In addition to his parents, Mr. Booker was preceded in death by two sisters, Ossie Cooke and Virginia Marshall; two brothers, Gene Booker and Jack Booker; and a son-in-law, Miles Earl Brown. The funeral service will be held Friday, July 3, 2015, at 2:00 PM at Bannertown Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rusty Reed officiating. Entombment will follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by Dr. Roger Kerley and staff at Medical Associates of Surry, Dr. David Smull and staff at Forsyth Heart Failure Clinic, and the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bannertown Fire Department, 124 Reeves Mill Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Bannertown Baptist Church, 1834 Westfield Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
