Charles was orphaned at an early age and was raised by his grandparents. His small-town upbringing gave him access to the fascinating attractions of the countryside, and a great love for the out-of-doors and its major sport, hunting, so marked his early enthusiasm as to become an engrossing hobby through his life. From the Academy in Kernersville he went to prep school at Oak Ridge, N.C., and then attended Guilford College, near Winston-Salem. Moving on to the University of North Carolina, he made a fine scholastic record, while contributing to his school's athletic success as an outstanding halfback on the football team.

He bagan his business career with Standard Oil Company, later joining the Atlantic Refining Company. In 1906 he organized the Kerner-Williams Shoe Company, an exclusive men's shoe emporium which was one of the first in Birmingham. He made substantial investments in business property.

In 1908 Charles established the National Supply Company, a firm dealing in wholesale chemicals, industrial paints and lubricants. He developed the business into a crowning success with a number of branch offices and warehouses.

On May 30, 1918, Charles Kerner married Beatrice Fay Fletcher of Winston-Salem. Her love of the out-of-doors matched that of her husband. They enjoyed hunting and had a keen interest in field trials with bird dogs. "Charley" was recognized as an authority on bird dog breeding.
