Mary, Mom, Sister, Grammy left us Sunday, July 12 for the big party in the sky. Always the optimist, a relentless finder of the positive and blatant ignorer of the negative, she was kind, generous, determined, totally impractical, slightly irreverent, a Christian and always fun loving. Mary was born in Oklahoma City to Lucille (Allen) Thomas and Clancy Thomas and had an older sister, Margaret (Thomas) Knudson, all of whom predeceased her. As much as she enjoyed seeing the world, Mary lived her entire life in various parts of the OKC area and was very much a proud Oklahoma woman. As a young girl, she enjoyed dance and performing, and as a teenager, she joined the Rainbow Girls, where she learned proper social decorum and table manners, which she later taught insistently and somewhat unyieldingly to her two frequently intractable sons. She graduated from Capitol Hill High School in 1955, attended The University of Oklahoma and joined Delta Gamma sorority while studying home economics and business. After leaving OU to start a family, she completed her degree at the University of Central Oklahoma and had a successful career in real estate. She also happily studied at the Marie-Blanche de Broglie Cooking School in France. Mary knew how to have a fun time, and she could usually be counted on to be the life of the party or the instigator of a celebration. Although she grew up in a modest household, even as a young girl, she had a knack for style and a taste for the finer things in life. As an adult, after raising her two sons, she traveled the world, developed an educated appreciation for gourmet food and wine and had the good fortune to experience many different cultures and to make friends all over the world. Mary loved to entertain and to cook gourmet food, and she seemed to always prepare at least twice as much as was necessary for whatever size gathering she was hosting. Her closest and most cherished friends are her many beloved local, lifelong soul mates with whom she enjoyed years of good humor, mostly harmless and legal mischief and revelry at home in OKC. Included in this group were many friends that were formed during her time as a mother, at work with her colleagues at RE/MAX First, and in her social groups, including Silk Stockings, bridge groups, the Nice Tie Club and her Gourmet de Solitaire. Mary leaves behind many admirers and cherishers of our time with her including her son, Phil, and daughter-in-law, Nancy, of the San Francisco Bay Area; and son, Todd, and daughter-in-law, Janet, of OKC, who were overwhelmingly tireless, tender and generous care givers and advocates during the last fifteen years of Mary's life. Mary's legacy also includes four grandchildren, one brother-in-law, two nephews and many, many extended family members. Her family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances will gather for a Celebration of her life at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 15 at Rose Hill Burial Park, 6001 N.W. Grand Blvd., OKC, and we also welcome one and all to join in a Reception to immediately follow at West restaurant at 6714 North Western, OKC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who want to remember Mary pick a special time and location in the next few days to celebrate life in a meaningful way with those who are nearest and dearest to them. Mary recommends serving your choice of great champagne or a non-alcoholic beverage equivalent. The family also wishes to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank-you to the generous staff at Epworth Villa, who looked after Mom so tenderly for the last four years.
