Ira was the first of five sons born to Chester Covel Buck and Mary White Toan who married on 19 Jul 1857. His four brothers were Edgar Dwight (1859-1860), Harry Eugene (b.1862), Charles Herbert (1863-1922) and Frank Covel (b.1865-1912).

New Yorkers Chester and Mary appear to have first settled in Addison, Lenawee Co., Michigan, where Ira was born on 23 Apr 1858. The family must have moved to Indiana shortly after Ira's birth.

On 30 Sep 1859, son Edgar joined the family. Sadly, he died the following spring on 18 Apr 1860.

Two months later, the family was enumerated on the 1860 Census, living in Plymouth, Marshall, Indiana, where Chester was earning a living as a merchant. Mary, aged 24, was home with 2-year-old Ira. Also living with the couple were Mary's younger brother Charles Eugene Toan, aged 23 and also a merchant, Mary's widowed mother Harriet Helen Toan, aged 47, and Mary's sister Caroline "Carrie" Mosher Toan, aged 19. Mary's father, Dr. Charles C. Toan was tragically killed when his carriage overturned when Mary was only seven years old.

The Civil War broke out the following spring , and three more sons would join the family during the four years of the conflict--Harry in 1862, Charles in 1863, and Frank in 1865.

On the 1870 Census, they were still in Plymouth's Center Township. They appear to have moved in with Ira's grandparents. Chester C. Buck, aged 76, also a retail merchant, was listed as head of household. Sarah (nee Briggs), aged 73, was keeping house. Chester Jr., aged 35, was a hardware dealer. Mary, aged 34, was home with their four sons--Ira, aged 12, Harry, aged 8, Charles, aged 7, his name transcribed as "Harvest" by the enumerator, and Frank, aged 5. Also there was 18-year-old servant girl Maggie Kepler.

Eight years after that census, Ira married Charlotte "Lotta" Maria Perry on 12 Nov 1878 in Marshall County. They would welcome five children in the years that followed--Harriet M. (b.Feb 1881), Ada Louise (b.Feb 1883), Chester C. (b.26 Jan 1885), Kate M. (b.Dec 1886), and Ira Dawson Jr. (b.Jun 1892).

Sometime after Kate's birth in 1886, the family moved to Wisconsin, where Ira Jr. joined the family in 1892. By the 1900 Census, they had again relocated. That census year, they were living at 803 Perry Ave. in Peoria, Peoria Co., Illinois. Ira, aged 42, was the president of a bank. Charlotte, aged 43, reported that she had had five children, and that all five had survived to that census. Home with her were Harriet, aged 19, Ada, aged 17, Chester, aged 15, Kate, aged 13, and Ira Jr., aged 7. There to help out was 26-year-old servant-girl Julia Stranghter.

The family stayed in Illinois, but by the 1910 Census, they had moved to the big city and were living in Chicago, Cook County, where Ira, aged 51, was the treasurer for a vacuum cleaner factory. Charlotte, aged 53, again reported that all five of her children were alive. Still at home with her were Kate, aged 23 and Ira, aged 16. Maria J. Perry, Charlotte's 70-year-old widowed mother, had joined the family.

Ira and Charlotte's son Chester had moved to British Columbia, Canada where he appeared on the 1911 Canadian Census. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces and served with the 202nd Battalion. In November of 1916, he deployed to France. On his sister Kate's passport application to work with the Red Cross in Europe, it was noted that she had a brother serving in the military, stationed in France, and she had to agree she would not try to visit him during her stay. Sadly, Chester became ill and in July of 1817, he was deemed "unfit for service" and was admitted to the Ponoka Asylum Hospital in Ponoka, Alberta, Canada on 13 Jul 1917, where he eventually died on 7 Dec 1917. Noted was the following: "General paralysis of the insane, immediate cause of death exhaustion." He was only 32 years old.

Chester's mother Charlotte was spared the grief from his illness and death, as she departed this earth two years before her son in 1915 at age 58.

For some reason, I wasn't able to find Ira on either the 1920 or 1930 Census. He died on 5 Jan 1937 in Chicago, aged 78, and was buried there. Thanks to Find-A-Grave, he has been reconnected to wife Charlotte.
