President of Uruguay. Batlle y Ordonez served two terms as President of Uruguay (1903 to 1907 and 1911 to 1915) and is credited with making Uruguay a more stable democratic nation. He came from a prominent political family (his father served as president). Batlle y Ordonez started his political career when he started the newspaper "El Dia" in 1886. Afterwards he joined the Colorado party and started to change it to become one of the dominant political parties in the nation. Batlle y Ordonez also served in the legislature before being elected president in 1903. His narrow margin of victory led to a civil war in 1904 with the rival Blancos, but his party, the Colorados, would come out as victors. There was another election in 1905 in which Batlle y Ordonez won fair and square. He stepped down in 1907. In 1911 Battle y Ordonez won the presidency again and continued the reforms that he had started in his first term. After leaving office for the second time, he tried to change the presidency from one man to a "collegiate executive". A national executive council, along with a president, was set up instead and seen as a defeat for Batlle y Ordonez. He served as president of the council in both 1920 and 1926.
