President of Uruguay. Pacheco Areco served as President of Uruguay from 1967 to 1972. His early political life saw him serve in the national legislature as a member of the Colorado party. Pacheco Areco was elected vice president in 1967, but took over as president after the death of Oscar Gestido the same year. He immediately put forward price and wage freezes to combat inflation and this was met with violent labor protests. To end these protests, Pacheco Areco suspended parts of the constitution. His administration also saw violent outbreaks by the guerrilla group Tupamaros. Pacheco Areco responded by imposing a state of emergency in the country. He tried to seek a change in the constitution that would allow him to run for a second term, but this was unsuccessful. He would continue to serve in various posts in government until retiring in 1994.
