Gloria Chávez Tristani, age 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on July 16, 2015 at her apartment in Bethesda, MD. The daughter of the late United States Senator Dennis Chávez (D-NM.).
Gloria was born in Albuquerque, NM on September 12, 1925 and spent her childhood moving between Washington, DC and New Mexico.
After graduating from Georgetown Visitation Preparatory, she attended the George Washington University.
Gloria was married on February 9, 1946 to Jorge Enrique Tristani at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew the Apostle in Washington, DC. Many Washington dignitaries attended the ceremony including Margaret Truman, who was a bridesmaid and hosted a wedding dinner honoring Gloria and Jorge. The event turned out to be the first social gathering held at the White House since the beginning of World War II. Gloria and Jorge were married for sixty-five years, and were able to celebrate their sixtieth anniversary in 2006 at the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC with many friends and family. Gloria spent most of her adult life with Jorge in San Juan, Puerto Rico where they raised their three children. Gloria enjoyed hosting many weddings and parties for the family in their home on Calle Magdalena in Condado. The family also owned a beach house in Boqueron, Puerto Rico where Gloria enjoyed fishing and playing poker. Gloria and Jorge in their later years spent their time between New Mexico, Washington DC and Puerto Rico.
Gloria was proud of her large native New Mexican families -- the Chávezes and Espiñosas with her fifty-two first cousins. During Gloria's time in Albuquerque, and later, she worked hard to preserve the memory and legacy of her father Senator Chávez. Gloria pushed for the Dennis Chávez 35-cent postage stamp, which was issued by the United States Postal Service in 1991 in its Great American Series of stamps. Gloria established the Dennis Chávez Foundation, and served as President Emeritus. The Foundation collaborated with the City of Albuquerque and in 1999 the city commissioned and unveiled a statue of Dennis Chávez in Albuquerque's Civic Plaza. Through the Foundation, Gloria also helped to endow, through the Foundation, the Dennis Chávez Lectureship on Law & Civil Rights held biennially at the University of New Mexico School of Law. This lecture series memorializes Chávez's legacy as a public servant and a champion of civil rights. In 2013, Gloria donated a portrait of her father painted on hand-etched black granite by Francisco Passalacqua to the National Portrait Gallery. Gloria loved life, nature, music, politics and people. Gloria enjoyed painting, dancing and collecting. Gloria loved children. Most of all, her passion was spending time with family, in particular her two great-grandchildren. Gloria was loving, kind, and generous. Gloria was blessed by her faith and was a devotee of the Virgen de Guadalupe.
Gloria is survived by her son, Jorge E. Tristani Jr., of Albuquerque, NM, her son, Dennis C. Tristani and his wife, Anne Howard-Tristani of Washington, D.C. and her daughter, Maria Gloria Tristani of Chevy Chase, MD. Gloria is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Lu López and her husband, Armando López of San Juan, Puerto Rico and grandchildren, Michael Tristani, Dennis Tristani, William Tristani, Christine Tristani, Vanesa Cox-Tristani and her husband, Cesar Nuñez, Jorge Thomson, Andrew Thomson, Roddy Thomson, Dennis Thomson and great-grandsons, Javier Nuñez and Bryke Tristani, as well as nieces and nephews, Cissie Coy and her husband, Wayne, Imelda González de Diego, Dina Siaca, Rene Esteves, Marieli Esteves and her husband Jack, Ruby López, Tony López and his wife, Anita, Sonia Sinz and her husband, Eddie and many other family members.
A funeral Mass will be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico on July 23, 2015 followed by internment with her husband at the Puerto Rico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for a donation in Gloria's name to the Leukemia And Lymphoma at www.lls.org.
