Born in Mannheim, Germany, at age 12 Nick arrived in NYC on 8 December 1936 aboard the SS Berengaria with mother and brother. They joined his father and took up residence in Manhattan, NY.

Nick enlisted in the Army as a Private at New York City, NY on 26 June 1943 but received a commission shortly afterward. His singling out for OCS my have been due to his ability with the German language.

2nd Lt. Emanuel was serving in the 82nd Airborne Division and was attached to the HQ Company, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment on 11 September 1944. As such he may have seen combat during the battle of The Bulge which erupted three months later.

1st Lt Emanuel was one of seven men killed on 14 March 1945 during a parachute demonstration jump when a C-47 lost power due to a thrown propeller sending the aircraft plunging through a group of descending parachutists.
