John Lee "Penny" Cornwell, 96, of Remington, passed away on July 22, 2015, at his home.
He was born on March 8, 1919, in Culpeper County, to the late George Franklin Cornwell and Ethel Margaret Taylor Cornwell.
Mr. Cornwell was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army from June 1941 until September 1945. He retired as a guard at the Warrenton Training Center. Mr. Cornwell loved horses and mules and enjoyed working with draft horses. He was interested in anything related to horses and horse shows, working with 4-H groups and using horses in parades. He was a man of his word and was a good judge of people.
His wife, Helen Robinson Cornwell, and a son, Samuel “Pop” Cornwell, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his children, Helen Gibson of Lignum, Robert "Buck" Cornwell and wife Doreen, and Judy Olinger and husband John, all of Remington; his late son’s partner, Elaine; 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 26, at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton. Rev. J. Richard Winter will conduct a graveside service at 11 a.m. Monday, July 27, at the Remington Cemetery.
