The son of Bernard "Barney" & Anne Margaret (Kintzler - Frank's death certificate says "Spangler") Aumen, he arrived in America in 1844. In 1860, he was a farmer living in Germany Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 8" tall with light hair and blue eyes. He is reported both to have been born at sea and in Bavaria, Germany.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg March 20, 1865, as a private with Co. I, 98th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 29, 1865.

He married Martha Henrietta Ryder January 14, 1868, in Adams County and fathered Anna Margaret (b. 01/28/68), William S. (b. @1871), James (b. @1872), John Augustus (b. 05/24/74), Francis Martin (b. 11/10/75), Martha Virginia (b. 01/0979), Mary Margaret (b. 02/02/82), Mary Joan (b. 06/12/84), Agnes Cecelia (b. 06/15/87), Grace Alverta (b. 04/06/90), and Elizabeth Agnes (b. 09/08/92). In his later years, he served as a Gettysburg Battlefield guard, his station being the "High Water Mark." He died at age 70-3-2 from a "cerebral hemorrhage" caused by "arterio-cap-fibrosis" with "chronic nephritis" a contributing factor.
