THE SUNSHINE STATION RAILWAY DISASTER
Incorrectly identified as Thomas McKANE in many reports.
On the night of Easter Monday, 20 April 1908, over 400 were injured and 44 people died as a result of a Melbourne-bound train from Bendigo colliding with the rear of a mail train from Ballarat, which was just leaving the station. Around 1,100 people were aboard the two trains. Almost all of the casualties were from the Ballarat train, as the Bendigo train was cushioned by its two locomotives.

Brother of Michael McKean.

Married Alice Teresa Gorman in 1907.

Council employee, who lived at 52 Rosslyn street, West Melbourne, aged 39 years.

AN EARLY IDENTIFICATION
Gradually as the day grew brighter the tale of the dead began to grow. Aniongst the earliest at Spencer street were the husband and son of Mrs. Williams, of 68 Elgin street, Carlton. Almost distracted with grief the children piercing cries of sorrow began to caress the remains of the dead mother, until at last they were led from the scene. Towards eight o'clock another painful episode took place. Michael McKane, a fine looking specimen of an artisan, who was peering over the shoulders of others; was observed to dart forward suddlenly and to cry, "My God! It is him! Oh, Oh! It's my brother." Instantly a policeman was by his side calming the distressed man, who, covering his face with his hat, began to sob deeply., A moment later he recovered himself sufficiently to explain that his brother was Thomas McKane, a council employee, of 52 Rosslyn street, West Melbourne.

SUNSHINE DISASTER.
COUNTY COURT CLAIMS.
AN ACTION SETTLED.
In the County Court yesterday, before Judge Johnston and special juries, further claims for damages arising out of the Sunshine railway disaster were heard. Alice Teresa McKean, of Rosslyn-street, West Melbourne, widow, as administratrix of the estate of her husband, Thomas McKean, sought to recover £2,000 from the department for his death. McKean, who was an employee of the Melbourne City Council, was killed in the accident. Mr. Maxwell (instructed by Mr. J. Woolf) appeared for Mrs. McKean, and Mr. Purves. K.C., and Mr. Schutt for the Railway Commissioners. When the jury had been empanelled, Mr. Purves said, "I have to announce that the case is settled." Mr. Maxwell said, "That is so. I think the commissioners have behaved in a fair and generous way." The case was then struck out. The terms of settlement were not disclosed, but it is understood that the commissioners agreed to pay £1,000 in full settlement.
