Sophie H. Irvine, 98, of Grand Island died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at the Tiffany Square Care Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Cathedral. Father Tom Ryan will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday with a rosary and scripture wake at 6 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Mrs. Irvine was born on Jan. 19, 1904, southwest of Farwell to Robert and Anastasia (Dorsynski) Wysocki.
Survivors of the immediate family include a son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Bonnie Irvine of Grand Island; two daughters and a son-in-law, Gloria and Jerry Rathman of Farwell, and Virjean Beckman of North Platte.
Also surviving are her 14 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Sophie attended school at St. Anthony's Parochial School and Farwell High School. She graduated from St. Paul High School. She then attended Kearney State Teachers College and received her normal teacher training. She taught at a
country school near Farwell.
She was united in marriage to Norton S. (Eriksen) Irvin on June 16, 1926, at St. Anthony's Church in Farwell. They made their home on a farm northwest of Farwell. In 1933, they moved to a farm north of Shelton and in 1941 they moved to the Abbott farm south of Alda. In 1973 they retired and moved to Grand Island.
Sophie worked in the office of the Central Nebraska Gun Club at Doniphan from 1950 to 1980.
Mr. Irvine died in 1980, and Sophie continued to make her home in Grand Island.
She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral, St. Mary's Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Norton; two sons, DeVon and Marlin Irvine; three grandchildren, Steve, Margie and Lucy; three brothers, Alex, Harry and Matthew Wysocki; and two sisters, Hattie Ambrose and Catharine Hagman.
