Actor. He played many roles on British television for half a century. He began his career as a merchant seaman, but decided to go into acting afterwards. Lewis started acting in the theater, but gradually went into films and then television. In 1969 he started one of his famous roles as Blakey on the British sitcoms "On The Buses" and "Don't Drink the Water", a role he would play until 1975. In 1988 Lewis assumed the role of "Smiler" Hemingway in the sitcom "Last of the Summer Wine" until illness forced him to leave the series in 2007. He also played Harry Lambert in the sitcom "Oh Doctor Beeching" from 1995 to 1997 and Alf in "The All New Alexei Sayle Show". Lewis' film career included roles in "Staircase", "Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins", and "Last Remake of Beau Geste".
