Gene was born in Decatur, the son of Sheridan and Dorothy Blankenship. He worked for a xylophone factory, as a meat cutter, and finally, a materials specialist at Caterpillar, where he retired in 1992. He married Nancy Reed in 1959, later married Sharon Boyer.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon; son Timothy Blankenship; brother, Wesley Leon of Clifton, NC; aunt, Betty Blankenship.
He was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Nancy.
