Joan Barnett Keating, 81 , passed away peacefully into the arms of her Heavenly Father at 9:40 a.m. on Aug. 25, 2015, in Sagecrest Alzheimer's Care Center in San Angelo.

She was born Oct. 31, 1933, in Honeygrove, Texas, to Reed and Ethelyne Barnett.

Joan moved to San Angelo when she was seven years old and resided there until the time of her death. She is a graduate of San Angelo High School and San Angelo College, majoring in business administration. Joan began working in a law office while attending college and continued her career as a legal secretary until her retirement in December of 1998.

She married James Emmett Keating on Nov. 30, 1956. They were married 55 years until his death on Dec. 30, 2011.

Joan was a very devoted Christian woman and was a charter member of Johnson Street Church of Christ.

Joan loved watching football on TV, especially the Texas Longhorns and the Dallas Cowboys through the good times and not-such-good times. She always looked forward to college basketball's March Madness and the Road to the Final Four. She enjoyed working in the yard, was an excellent seamstress and made many of her own clothes. Reading and listening to country music were also favorite pastimes.

Joan lived with Alzheimer's for over 10 years and was in care for over half of that time. She is now free from this disease that took her mind and has been reunited with her husband and parents.

Joan is survived by her daughter and her husband, Julie and Scott Lawlis of San Antonio; two grandsons whom she adored, Matthew and Tanner Lawlis; a son, Todd Keating of The Woodlands; and a special sister-in-law, Patsy Leffel of Dallas.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with Tommy King, minister of Johnson Street Church of Christ officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and many thanks to the compassionate, loving staff at Sagecrest Alzheimer's Care Center. The love and tender care they showed Joan will never be forgotten.

Memorials may be made to Sagecrest Alzheimer's Care Center, Rust Street Ministries or to your favorite charity .

The older we get, the harder life becomes. But God never forgot my mother and was with her every step of the way on her journey. "Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you." (Isaiah 46:4)
