The oldest of all of the Linn children, Elizabeth Linn was married to Charles Brockden Brown on November 19, 1804, by her father the Rev. William A. Linn.

They had been through a four year courtship, occasioned partly by their differences in religious background. Charles Brockden Brown was a Quaker born into a Quaker family, and Elizabeth was both Presbyterian and Dutch Reformed. Such a marriage was deeply frowned upon by the Society of Friends, which, after the marriage issued a letter of censure to Charles Brown. However, during his life he remained on the rolls of his church, and after his death he was buried in the Old Quaker Cemetery.

There are two Find A Grave entries for Charles Brockden Brown, both managed by Findagrave. Wikipedia and Find A Grave, as well as other records, have placed his burial in "Friends Arch Street Meeting House Burial Ground" in Philadelphia.

However, friends or family have also placed a small monument for him in the "Laurel Hill Cemetery" in Philadelphia, which photo is on a separate Find A Grave page.

Philadelphia Quaker cemeteries have been very disturbed and reworked over the years.

The children of Elizabeth Linn and Charles Brockden Brown were:

William Linn Brown, b. September 1805, m. October 10, 1836, Emily G. Burling, daughter of Samuel Burling of New York City. Please see Find A Grave Memorial# 100862483.

Charles Brockden Brown (twin) b. September 1805 d. 1875, in the South. Please see Find A Grave Memorial# 6292926.

Eugene L. Brown, b. 1807, d. 1824.

Mary C. Brown, b. 1809, d. 1829.

"Charles Brockden Brown, American Gothic Novelist", by Harry R. Warfel, University of Florida Press, 1949, makes further mention of the loving care Elizabeth gave to Charles during the years of their marriage and during his last illness, and of the love which she bore for their children.

Harry Warfel also in his book speaks of the great friendship that painter, playwright and poet William Dunlap had with Charles and Elizabeth Brown. He paid them many visits in 1806 at their Philadelphia residence when the miniatures above were painted.

After the death of Charles Brockden Brown, Elizabeth ran a boarding house at the Philadelphia Brown house for several years, and later boarding houses in other locations.

From "Pennsylvania Genealogies" [Linn of Lurgan], William Henry Egle, Harrisburg, PA, 1896, pp. 367-382, writes of Elizabeth (Linn) Brown:

'She was a woman of taste and literary acquirements.'
