A list of graves seen on the Oregon/California trail in 1850 was published in the St. Louis Missouri Republican of October 6 of that year. One of the many names is Charles P. Macey, age 12, died June 14, of cholera, from "Davis" Co., Indiana. In his 1853 overland diary, Andrew S. McClure reports seeing the head *board* for Charles. When writing, McClure was on the south side of the Platte River about 15 miles east of the Platte Forks or a mile or two south of present-day Brady, Nebraska. Trail grave markers, especially wooden head boards, rarely lasted more than two or three years. Because the grave was still undisturbed three years after burial and because it is well over 1,000 miles to Los Angeles it is highly unlikely that the remains of Charles were ever removed to California. It is almost certain, therefore, that this marker in Evergreen Cemetery is a cenotaph. (research notes by: Richard Rieck)
