She received a bachelor's degree in art history in 1964 from Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York. After college, she worked at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Later she was an assistant to the curator and director of an art gallery in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
At age 25, she married Thomas Lawrence "Tom" Owsley and settled in Baltimore in 1982, where she had two sons, Jonathan Hawkes "Jon" Owsley and Nicholas Barrett "Nick" Owsley. After an amicable divorce, in 1988, she married James J. Harrison Jr, from whom she was separated when she disappeared on August 5, 1994.
At the time, Susan owned and operated the Shady Lady shop in Baltimore, which specialized in handcrafted lamp shades. She also was a docent at the Baltimore Museum of Art.
Susan was predeceased by both of her parents. Survivors include two sons; three brothers - William T. Hurley III, John P. Hurley and Robert E. Hurley; and one sister, Mary E. "Molly" Moran.
