After his Honorary Discharge from the Navy, Doug attended the University of Nevada at Reno for two years and then transferred to Oregon State College of Forestry and graduated with a degree in Forestry in 1950. By that time he and Millie had two boys, Tom and Bill, with another baby on the way. While working in the forest products industry in California, Jim and Steve were born into the family. Doug and Millie and the four boys moved to Oregon in 1953 and settled into their home in Holy Family Parish. Jennifer was born soon after they moved into the first and only home they bought, and KC followed a few years later.
In 1959 Doug took a job with the US Forest Service and stayed there for the rest of his working career, retiring at age 60 in Sept of 1983. An avid outdoorsman, Doug took his family on many camping trips, backpacking trips, and car trips to see family in California and Nevada. Doug loved fishing, scuba diving, photography, leatherworking, gardening, sailing, skiing, golfing, and traveling. He built two sailboats in his garage and Millie sewed the sails for one of them. Doug and Millie traveled around Europe, the United States, the Middle East, England and Ireland. They took their adult kids and spouses on two vacations, once to Mexico and twice to Hawaii. Doug and Millie were members of Pleasant Valley Golf Club and he always said that Millie played golf while he played at golf! Once Doug turned 85 years old he could play golf for free at the city courses and took great advantage of this, playing for free for over 6 years!:>)
A devoted family man and Catholic, Doug was a member of Holy Family Parish for over 60 years and a volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul for many years, earning the “Vincentian of the Year” Award in 2014. Doug was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to many. He had many friendships that lasted well over 50 years. Doug became very interested in genealogy and after he retired he was able to combine many of his travels with research for this hobby. He and Millie made trips to Boston MA, Washington DC and Salt Lake City Utah for general research, and then to Galina Illinois where many of his relatives had settled. He also took many trips to California and since he had a lot of research to do there, he often took some of the kids or grandkids to show them where the family had lived and were some were buried.
