United States Navy Rear Admiral. He served in the Mexican War and Civil War, rising to the rank of Rear Admiral. During the January 1865 combined Army-Navy operations against Fort Fisher, North Carolina, he commanded the steamer gunboat "USS Maumee". He died in Hong Kong on 1889 while in command of the United States Navy's Asiatic Fleet.
