Born in Callura, County Clare, Ireland on October 3, 1925 he was the son of the late John Joseph Garrahy and Margaret Neylon Garrahy and came to the United States at a young age. He was the brother of Mary Garrahy Penkala of Warwick, Vincent Garrahy of Narragansett, and the late Governor J. Joseph Garrahy formerly of Narragansett.
A graduate of LaSalle Academy, Ed was honorably discharged from the United States Navy and then played Professional Baseball pitching for the St. Louis Cardinal's Baseball Organization. Ed began working at Automatic Heating Equipment Company (formerly known as RI Fuel Pump, Inc) in 1948, the year he married, and purchased the business in 1968. Under Ed's leadership and work ethic the company today is one of the leading Heating Equipment and Control Distributorships in New England.
Ed devoted his life to his faith, family and youth. He was the Director of the Providence Diocese Gym (now known as St. Patrick's) for 20 years starting the Canteen Dance for Youth and coaching basketball, leading the team to a New England Championship in 1953.Those teams had the thrill of playing at the Boston Garden on multiple occasions. Ed coached basketball and baseball at Blessed Sacrament Parish, Providence and directed the Blessed Sacrament Minstrels for many years. He was a Past Grand Knight from Dillon Council #3563 Knights of Columbus and Past District Deputy K of C.
He was a Lector and Catholic Charity volunteer at area churches including St. Patrick's, Blessed Sacrament, St. Augustine and St. Veronica. Ed was a Past member of the Board of Directors for RI Big Brothers and a recipient of their "Big Brother Man of the Year Award". Ed was named CYO Man of the Year in 1954 and was inducted into the R.I. Referee Association Hall of Fame in 2000. Ed was the Big Brothers of R.I. Humanitarian Award recipient in 2001 and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame inductee in 2009.
A former member of Point Judith Country Club, Ed was known to sing an occasional Irish Ballad and loved traveling to the West Coast of Ireland having visited "home" over 35 times.
Ed leaves his children, Kathryn Garrahy Serrecchia (David) of Saunderstown RI, Patricia Garrahy-Robertson (Bryan) of South Dartmouth, MA and Ted Garrahy, Jr. (Tricia) of East Greenwich, RI; Grandchildren, Sean Serrecchia (Cara), Scott Serrecchia (Talia), Laura Robertson, Sarah Robertson, E. Patrick Garrahy III, Ian Garrahy and Conor Garrahy, Great Grandchildren, Mia, Luca, Milania and Salvatore Serrecchia and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral was held on Saturday from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road, Warwick, RI. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, September 26, 2015 in St. Veronica's Chapel, 1035 Boston Neck Road, Narragansett, RI. Burial followed in St. Francis Cemetery, South Kingstown, RI.
