Educated in America and Europe. President of the New York & New Haven Steamship Company and one of the organizers of the Central New England Railroad.

Married 6 June 1867 to a young widow, Emelia Ward Predmore in New Orleans. Divorced. Two daughters. Married second to Elizabeth Janison Chapin of Chicago on Nov. 21 1905 (according to wife's passport application)

Burial location taken from New York City Municipal Deaths, 1795-1949. Note - "The Chapin Genealogy" by Gilbert W. Chapin states that he is buried "with his father and mother, in the mausoleum, which he had Tiffany build in the old cemetery on Chicopee Street". The notes on his parents memorials in the Springfield Cemetery state that they were removed to Chicopee St. Cemetery.
