Oscar, the son of Osias J. Carriere and Clara D. Carriere of Santa Monica California enlisted in the US Marine Corps on October 11, 1965 in Los Angeles. In Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company F, 2d Battalion, 4th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of August the 4th Battalion departed Phu Bai in Thua Tien Province to Dong Ha in Quang Tri Province and began to participate in Operation PRAIRIE.

On August 26, during an engagement with enemy forces, while searching an enemy Bunker Complex, 6 kilometers north northeast of Ca Lu Airfield during Operation Prairie two men were killed in action. One of the casualties was PFC Carriere as a result of gun shot wounds he sustained.
