On September 15, 1921, as Henry Adler Berliner, he married Josephine Mitchell in the District of Columbia.

Retired Air Force Colonel Henry A. Berliner was a native of the District of Columbia. He attended Cornell University and in 1918, received a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1919 to 1926, he worked with his father, Emile Berliner, on helicopter research. They built and flew one of the first helicopters capable of horizontal and vertical flight. From 1930 to 1954 he served as chair of Engineering and Research Corp. (ERCO) in Riverdale, Maryland. Later, he was President of Tecfab, which was a concrete products firm until 1962. He served in both World War I and II. During World War II he was the operations officer for the 8th Air Force. His awards included the Distinguished Service Medal and he was named a Commander of the British Empire. He died at age 74 on Friday, May 1, 1970 at his home, 2841 Tilden Street Northwest of a heart attack. Survivors included his wife, Josephine Mitchell Berliner; two daughters: Mrs. Russell E. [Cora Anne] Cunningham of the District of Columbia and Mrs. George L. [Josephine Louise] Vargas [1926-2010] of Reno, Nevada; one son, Henry A. Berliner Jr. of the District of Columbia and eight grandchildren. Services were held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Rock Creek Road Northwest. Interment was in Rock Creek Cemetery. Contributions were suggested to a favorite charity in lieu of flowers.
